TAWAU: Firefighters waded through floodwaters here to help bring out trapped pupils so they could sit for their UPSR examinations.
The pupils were transported to schools via boat after their homes and the roads at at Kampung Pasir Putih and Batu 2 Jalan Bunga Raya were submerged in water.
District fire and rescue department despatched 12 personnel to assist the villagers after receiving a distress call at 4.43am.
According to the department report, the evacuation operation was conducted and that other areas namely Kampung Vietnam and Batu 22 were also flooded.
“Firefighters helped to bring out 10 pupils from Kampung Pasir Putih and another from Batu 2,” said the report.
In the mission, a firefighter was also seen carrying an infant.
The department noted that UPSR candidates from Batu 22 managed to get to their exam hall without assistance from firefighters.
A spokesperson said the department had received report from the district education office that all 17 UPSR candidates, affected by the floods, from four primary schools attended their exams.
“The last candidates managed to arrive at the exam hall at SK Pasir Putih and SK Titingan at 8.15am,” he said.
