MIRI: Two-hundred needy students here have received a total of RM50,000 from the tithe collected by Petronas Muslim Staff Welfare Association (BAKIP).

According to Head of Sarawak Oil, Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd, Anuar Ismail, the recipients are from 20 selected local primary and secondary schools.

The programme is part of Petronas staff’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative to help underprivileged families in the city.

“The tithe comprises funds collected from Petronas staff for distribution to the poor in line with the company’s mission of contributing to the wellbeing of society,” Anuar said at the distribution ceremony held in conjunction with BAKIP’s ‘Back-To-School’ programme at Petronas Carigali office here yesterday.

He expressed his hope that the contribution would motivate the schoolchildren to do their best in their studies.

“I thank all staff and volunteers involved in this programme. You have shown your commitment to the company by supporting our agenda in sustainable development and sacrificing your weekends to support this event,” he said.

Touching on Petronas CSR activities last year, Anuar said last November Petronas collaborated with Yayasan Sarawak and Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) to launch Mara Junior Science College (MRSM) project in Bintulu.

“This project is one of Petronas’ CSR commitments in Sarawak, and it is expected to be completed by 2021,” he said.

Anuar added that Petronas is also assisting in the building of a rural hostel for SK Orang Kaya Muda Paloh in Daro, which is expected to be ready next year. The hostel can accommodate 190 students.

“Petronas’ contribution in the education sector is a part of our commitment to ensuring the success of the nation’s sustainable development agenda, particularly in Sarawak,” he said.

Among the objectives of yesterday’s programme were to encourage Petronas personnel to be involved in volunteerism, to foster closer ties between BAKIP and government agencies like the Education Department and also schools, and to uphold Petronas’ image as a key player in CSR activities.

The programme also featured a motivation talk by Mohd Nassru Abdul Latif.

Present were Petronas Sarawak Office manager Ekni Raduan, BAKIPchairman Junaida Hoodi and a Muslim religious teacher under Petronas Carigali Miri Office, Zulfadli Kapli.
