PUTRAJAYA: Students will be able to enjoy discounts when they dine at any of the 10,000 mamak eateries in the country with the upgraded 1Malaysia Student Discount Card (KADS1M).
“These card holders will be able to enjoy at least 5% discount at these mamakrestaurants,” Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin said.
The ministry, he said, was finalising talks with the Malaysian Indian Muslim Restaurant Owners Association.
“The association, which has over 10,000 outlets, has agreed in principle to participate in this discount programme. All we have left to do is to sign a memorandum of understanding,” he said at an event with student consumer groups.
Hamzah said his ministry was also in talks with the Malaysian Indian restaurant owners’ association, which has also shown interest to participate.
At the event, Hamzah launched the new KADS1M-debit card, which is the newly-improved version of the discount card.
Besides getting discounts from over 400 merchants nationwide, the cards also function as a debit card which runs on the Mastercard and Cirrus platform.
Card holders will not be charged the 6% Goods and Services Tax imposed on MEPS ATM withdrawals.
Students who make transactions with the card when overseas will also be spared the extra charges.
“We have over 400 participating merchants in the programme, with 779 outlets all over the country, for the convenience of the students. There will be more to come and this list will be constantly updated,” said Hamzah.
Under the KADS1M scheme, students can enjoy up to 60% discount on selected items and other benefits at various retail outlets and services.
The categories of participating merchants include stationery, clothing, sportswear, medical centres, optometry, IT products, groceries and eateries.
The card was launched in 2012 and there are over 1.8 million cardholders.
